Stoneworld Oxfordshire recently completed a bespoke project for a private residence involving the construction of a concrete cast spiral staircase. This project presented unique challenges and required meticulous attention to detail to meet the client’s specific design requirements.
Design and Construction Details
Lighting Strip Integration:
The client requested the addition of a lighting strip under each tread. To achieve this, a precise 10mm x 10mm slot was milled into the underside of each tread. This slot placement was critical to ensure the light was cast correctly without compromising the aesthetic appeal of the staircase. The integration of the lighting strip necessitated the use of thicker stone to maintain structural integrity and ensure durability.
Structural Adjustments and Design Complexity:
The design of the staircase was particularly complex due to the need for each tread to curve around a central post. The overhang of the treads increased to accommodate the lighting strip, adding to the intricacy of the project. Careful coordination and precise measurements were required to ensure that each tread aligned perfectly, creating a seamless spiral effect.
Materials Used:
The treads and risers were crafted from Moleanos Limestone, known for its strength and aesthetic qualities. The stone was finished with a rubbed texture, enhancing its visual appeal. To protect the limestone and ensure its longevity, the entire staircase was sealed with Rob Parker’s Best patio sealer. This high-quality sealer helps to maintain the stone’s natural beauty while providing durable protection against wear and environmental factors.
Additional Features:
The project also involved ensuring that the lighting strips were positioned in such a way as to provide optimal illumination without casting unwanted shadows. This required precise placement of the strips in front of the risers but far enough forward to achieve the desired lighting effect. The curving nature of the staircase around the central post added another layer of complexity, necessitating meticulous planning and execution.
